Designing an urban square
How to design an urban square? The theories and analyses on this site lead to five steps for designing a square:
Step 1: functional concept
First, make a functional concept: what kind of square do you want to create, with what purpose, disclosing which functions and what atmosphere will it have?
Step 2: define the location
Second, define the location: how does it fit in the urban network, how much crowd is attracted and how is it located regarding the surge?
Step 3: determine the size
Third, determine the size: what will be the principal form, what’s the size regarding the height, what is de location of the landmark and what will be the proportions?
Step 4: fit into place
Fourth, fit it into place: determine the exact shape, location and edges of the square, lay-out the entrances and sights and define the irregularities.
Step 5: design
And last, design the square: design the area and it’s facades.
